Take YOUR Time Back!

I was working at the florist yesterday and did not want to be there.  As much as I tried to calm my mind, and just live in the present moment, I couldn't shake the feeling of just wanting to get out of there.  It just wasn't where I wanted to be.  Where I felt I needed to be.

If you've felt similarly... in any situation... be it a job, in a relationship, anywhere... I believe it's a strong sign coming up from your Spirit that in fact, there is someplace else you need to be.

Maybe you can't leave where you are right at that moment.  I certainly wasn't going to just walk out of the florist right then.  I had a shift to finish.  But it was a definite confirmation that I'm doing the right thing by no longer working there past this week.  Yes, this is my last week there.... two more days left!

I believe strongly that we all need to "mind our own business."  I get that phrase from Robert Kiyosaki, author of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," among other great financial books.  My working at the florist has gone from minding my business... my business of wanting to work a part-time job for a while... to minding someone else's business -- the business of the shop owners.

Let me clarify that it's not a bad thing to work for someone else.  Perhaps you don't want to run a business or a company, but you're happy working in that business.  Great!  That's where you need to be then.  But if you reach a point of feeling like you're simply fulfilling someone else's agenda... that your time is no longer your own... then, in my opinion, it's time to get out.  Time to move on.

My time is one of the most valuable resources I have.  I am very choosy what I spend my time doing.  Granted, as I type that, all my hours of TV watching come to mind... so I could be a little more productive with my time choices, but I do enjoy certain TV shows, so I don't think there's anything wrong with entertainment and pleasure.

Anyway... the thought came to mind yesterday as I watched the hands on the clock move ever-so-slowly... that I need to take MY time back.  No longer be "stuck" following a schedule someone else sets up for MY time.

We all have a limited time here.  In this life.  We're all here for a reason.  A purpose.  When you no longer feel that your time is spent moving you towards your purpose, it's time to make a change.

What are YOU passionate about?  Are you pursuing that?

This question is directed to you, my readers, as much as it is back to myself.  I think that's a question we all should ask ourselves on a frequent basis.  Keep ourselves on track.  In line with our purpose.  Because what we're passionate about IS our purpose.

Our passions may change over our lives, and that's perfectly ok.  Change with them!  Follow wherever they lead.

The key is to be the one in charge of YOUR time.  It's your time, after all.  What do you want to do with it?  How do you want to spend it?  It truly is your choice.

  1. I definitely resonate with this blog ... got a new tutoring job, which has had its enjoyable moments ... but shouldn't I be feeling more passionate about it?? I work for a tutoring agency that charge $150/hr for my services, (can you believe it?? well, it's highly specialized tutoring, and this IS Los Angeles, but still ... and my take-home pay is only $25!!) What I really want to do is find more time to design jewelry ... I created a beautiful hand-made necklace the other day and I feel alive. So why can't I find more time to do what lights me up?? It takes a lot of energy to start a jewelry business, not to mention some capital. I am confused and overwhelmed right now. Thanks for listening to my ramblings!!

    1. Marielle,
I love your comments! I feel I relate to you as well.
Describing your tutoring agency pay rate was staggering to me. They GET $150/hr, and only pay the actual tutor...the person DOING the work...$25/hr? Something is not right with that, in my opinion. At least you should get half, but who knows what overhead expenses the agency has to pay. Anyway...
I agree with you that we should do what we're passionate about. Life is too short and goes by too quickly to spend any more time than necessary doing work FOR someone else, and fulfilling someone else's agenda. Granted, I KNOW it's hard, and scary, to NOT work for someone else sometimes, and NOT have that steady paycheck. It's a leap of faith, to be sure.
Have you looked into Marie Forleo's B School? I just wondered if it would help you actually build a business making your jewelry. Then you COULD do that as your business and make a great income! I BELIEVE there's a way for you to do what you love AND make a good living. I'm looking into Marie's B School myself right now. It does cost about $2,000, so that's not cheap. BUT it's for 8 weeks (actually 6, as 2 weeks are built in to "catch-up" and keep on track). I had heard about B school for a while now, but didn't know how it would benefit me. I don't know what changed, or clicked in my head, but I've decided I'm going to do it. I'm just waiting to hear when the next enrollment period is.
I wish you all the best in your continued journey. I'm right there with you...trying to figure stuff out and make my own way too.

    2. Thanks Sarah. It's nice to know I'm not alone. I have thought of B-school. Maybe I will do it, it is a pretty penny but I can find a way to do it if I really set my mind to it. I do agree that life is too short to be spent doing something you don't love!!!!

    3. Marielle,
I agree... B School is a little pricey, and that's why I didn't do it a while ago. When I first saw the price, I was like, "Whoa, I can't afford that!" Then it just kept coming up in my mind over and over and I finally realized it was time to do it. I know I need help building my business and brand and believe Marie and her B School will help launch me. I believe it would help launch you too. You don't necessarily have to answer this, but is your jewelry on etsy.com? Or eBay? Someplace where people CAN see it and buy it? Have you ever, or even considered, donating pieces to silent auctions? I know I've gone to several silent auctions for animal groups and there are always a handful of pieces that are hand-made "whatever" from the artist...could be jewelry, paintings... all sorts of things. It would get your name more "out there." You could send your business cards (if you don't have any, you should get some, they're pretty cheap), with the items you're donating, and the auction people will generally set them out with your item, so if people like it, they could pick up your card and go to your site and maybe order more stuff.
I actually work with a group (Spay and Neuter Services of Indiana) and they have a HUGE (like 100 items or so) silent, and live, auction every fall to raise money for their spay and neuter programs for dogs and cats. If you'd like, I'd be happy to set out a piece, or some pieces if you'd like to donate something, along with some cards for your website, or blog, or wherever. Just a thought. You can think about it and let me know. I would take a picture of your item at the auction, just so you can "see" it there, and send it to you.
If you're interested, you can email me at beyou.liveyourdream@gmail.com. The auction is in October, I THINK (fall sometime). Just a thought. :)
      All the best to you!!
